A brand new £36m NHS hospital is still going unused – because the floors are too hot to walk on. Issues with the eco-friendly underfloor heating at the hospital mean the corridors are ‘as hot as a Mediterranean beach’. Floor tiles are even buckling from the extreme heat as it hits 40ºC within the 108-bed Rhondda Valley Hospital, South Wales.

The NHS-paid for hospital was described as being one of the first in the UK to use sustainable materials and resources. The innovative underfloor heating system was publicised as being environmentally-friendly because it recycles heat. However staff say they are unnable to control the temperature of the floor in some areas of the hospital, including the corridors.

Rubber floor tiles could offer the solution to changeable floor temperatures as they are both flexable and durable. The vast array of flooring solutions available today means that stylish and practical products can be introduced into changeable and demanding environments.

A top chartered physiotherapist has asked employers to identify why accidents in the workplace happen and how they can be prevented in the future, the Health and Safety Executive reported.

Pauline Cole, who supports the HSE’s Shattered Lives campaign, said floor surfaces should be suitable for the work being done on them and they should be maintained and kept in a good condition. Obvious warning signs should also be visible when there is a change in flooring, like slopes and steps, while employees who notice workplace hazards should report them as soon as possible.

Some flooring surfaces are easier to maintain that others however. Studded Rubber floor tiles for example are durable and easy to clean, making them ideal for large floor areas.
