Not so long ago the average doorstep was bland, without personality and purely functional. But, understandably, we’ve become pretty bored of that.

These days there’s all kinds of innovative designs and statements emblazoned under the average household door, and one thing’s for sure people like to be noticed. We like to be different, to be stylish and to have belongings that say something about who we are and how we want to be perceived.

Our possessions and decor should have an injection of our personality, but the hard bit comes when trying to find home accessories that appear unique but are unfortunately mass produced.

Take for example this nifty cheeky coir doormat that depending on how you look at it will read both “Come in” and “Go away”. Annoyingly it’s only available in the US, but on second thoughts if everyone had one it would lose its appeal.

Perhaps on reflection the right balance to strike is picking subtly stylish and classically on-trend home accessories.

This rainbow coloured striped coir doormat meets our criteria exactly – with a stylish colour scheme to make enough of a statement without being overly loud, combined with functional dirt-trapping capabilities. It ticks our boxes, how about yours?

You can be assured that you won’t need to be putting leather elbow patches on Norwegian knit jumpers in order to pass of this little collection of cutesy coir doormats.

Keeping it natural, designer Ed Annink based these hippos and hares doormats on a 1920s pictogram by modernist artist and designer Gerd Arntz, and has had them constructed to high standards to ensure they can keep up with the wear and tear caused by busy households.

The hare doormat reaches an impressive 195 x 90cm and costs £72.50, whereas you’ll be able to pick up the hippo mat (the only hippo you’ll ever be able to lift!) for 55 quid (141 x 68cm). Pretty perfect if you’ve been wallowing in the mud all day!

If you’re looking for something a little less gimmicky, a bog standard coir entrance mat for your doorway that makes a simple yet stylish statement could be just what you need.

Fantastic at dirt-trapping, those clever natural fibres absorb moisture incredibly well. You can clean them by giving it a bit of a shake outside, or your vacuum cleaner will be able to do a good job instead.

Grab a stylishly sedate coir mat here, £25.99 for 120 x 60cm.

Now we’re big fans of coir doormats, that natural bristle and its ability to trap dirt helps us keep our OCD in check. Well, it’s understandable when coir makes having a tidy home so easy.

But if you had some straight-laced notion that clean can’t mean cheeky, then you were wrong.

This pretty witty door mat catches visitors unawares, and will set any stroppy salesman straight without you having to say a word.

Look down and you’ll find yourself having to take a second look with this cheeky coir mat beneath your feet. If cheeky’s not your cup of tea, then there’s plenty of more fun options we’ve found too.

This sensational leopard skin patterned coir doormat looks like its owner could eat men alive for breakfast.

So if you’ll be too busy chomping on the male species to clean, you’ll be glad to hear that all it requires is a quick whoosh of the vacuum cleaner or by giving it a good shake to get rid of the dirt.

And as if you need much more of an incentive, it’s under a tenner to buy online. Sold!
