The HSE (Health and Safety Executive) continues to promote its Shattered Lives Campaign which focuses on the need to reduce slip-related accidents in different sectors of business.

Accidents caused by slipping can be extremely distressing and remain alarmingly high in terms of statistics. For some unfortunate individuals, it can lead to a lifetime of disability and in worst cases, even death. While workplace slips and trips cause the most common kind of major injury, accounting for 38% of all such incidents, slips can happen virtually anywhere – even in the home.

In many cases, the risks can be minimised through good housekeeping. This is where the humble door mat comes into its own – amazing to think that a simple doormat could potentially save a life.

A doormat can be as much about safety as it is about floor protection. A well fitted door mat or entrance mat with effective moisture wiping properties can significantly reduce the risk of slipping on wet floor surfaces. The cleaner the doormat is kept, then the more likely it is to perform well so washable door mats are very often convenient for this purpose.

They don’t necessarily have to be expensive. Many cheap door mats are functional but may need replacing more often. To buy doormats online, including coir door mats and dirt trapper mats, it is worth considering a look at www.doormatsdelivered.com – a website that has something to offer most budgets.

Today, many of us still agree that colour affects our mood so it is important that our living space creates an environment where we can relax and feel well, at home! Even the smallest of colour detail can brighten up our spirits. From the nice rug on the floor that provides a cheerful and comforting focal point, to the colour of our walls and cushions, the tones we choose are important.

RED is said to be the colour of passion and romance; BLUE meaning beauty and wisdom, YELLOW represents warmth and happiness, while GREEN the continuance of life and adventure.

One of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to update a home is by changing the soft furnishings. Swap those dated old rugs, with vibrant modern rugs and make an instant difference, add a few cushions or maybe a throw, and a room can look completely different. If you don’t fancy trotting off to Ikea for your living room rug, then buy rugs online. Start with www.nicerug.co.uk – A new rug could mean a new lease of life!

It has to be said that there is nothing more irritating than a rug that slips around on either a carpet or smooth floor. All of a sudden your nice living room rug doesn’t seem quite so appealing when it has practically crawled into the hallway!

There are quite a few products available now to help rugs stay in place. Some are specifically for carpet, while others are suitable for use on wooden floors. With wooden flooring being so fashionable, there is a greater demand for non-slip rugs. According to some forums, there appears to be a mesh, almost rubbery feel rug underlay available, which from all accounts is a very effective solution.

Some rugs for home have an anti-slip backing (such as latex) to minimize movement which can be helpful. We found a few of the jute rugs such as Natural Herringbone and Natural Twist with this backing on a website where you can buy rugs online called www.nicerug.co.uk

While the rich and famous recover from the glitz of the Cannes Film Festival, we’d like you to spare a thought for the real star of the show. The star that appears year after year – reliable, always immaculately presented and the one you can guarantee will get up close and personal to all those Hollywood celebrities. The one that is always talked about, always photographed and never has any superstar tantrums. We are of course talking about the prestigious red carpet itself.

Which got us thinking – not about carpet, not even about Brad Pitt but more importantly, about flooring and in particular, rugs! Rugs that bring out the star quality in our homes but like the red carpet are very often overlooked.

There are so many fabulous modern rugs available to really add a funky theme to the home, with bold patterns and colour schemes. Contrast with simple black or white walls and plain furniture and the effects can be striking. Shaggy rugs are very in vogue at the moment. We especially like the Entropy luxurious shaggy rug from nicerug.co.uk available in bright red – a real stunner.

If these funky rugs are too much, then consider natural rugs, such as jute rugs or sisal rugs for example with their calming tones. Their simplicity and variation in texture makes them an effective enhancement for any living room or hallway.

In a way rugs should be viewed as ‘art on the floor’ so perhaps we should start looking at our floors in the same way we look at our walls!

Forbes’ latest rich list reveals that 30% of last year’s billionaires are feeling the pinch and also experiencing the humiliation of being relegated to mere millionaires. With this in mind, it seems that even the mega wealthy are having to weather the recession.

While they won’t be swapping their precious Prada for Primark (well, not just yet!), they may have to keep a watchful eye on their withering millions. For many it will be a case of refurbishing that mansion rather than buying a new one (or ten) this year and as for that luxury yacht, well it will just have to do for another year.

So while their chins drop to the floor perhaps they should consider a few home improvements or a revamp of their interior décor. Ok, so we can’t really imagine the likes of Sir Richard Branson shopping for a new doormat or Roman Abramovich scouring the high street for a nice rug. That said, it could be really easy to buy rugs and doormats by simply browsing www.nicerug.co.uk or www.doormatsdelivered.com

Fancy a flutter? Well, it’s the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival this week with the famous Gold Cup tomorrow (Fri 13). While Guinness celebrates its one millionth pint pulled at Cheltenham today, let’s spare a thought for the real heroes of the week – the horses. These beautiful Thoroughbred racehorses deserve the very best in stable design right down to the floor they stand on. Many will be stabled on rubber stable mats for additional comfort and protection, and for the stable lads and lasses, stable mats help speed up the daily mucking out chores! So for all you owners of stabled horses, check out www.stable-mats.com for a great choice of quality equestrian matting. It’s a real winner.
