Canadian horse owner Ian Moore recently commented upon his horse’s poor display at an elimination round of races in London, citing bad bedding as the cause.
His horse, Shadow Play, continued to blow hard up to an hour after the race on a seemingly cool night. After examination, the practicing veterinarian discovered substantial amounts of non-infectious mucus in the trachea, which on previous scoping of the animal he had never encountered.
Owner Moore said: “I believe the problem was the bedding that we have been using at Baycairn’s in the 19 days Shadow has been there. We used wood pellets, which are usually broken down by water, but in this case these pellets were extremely absorbent and hence were very dry and dusty, a fact that was compounded by the double stall Shadow is in.
“Our harness bags and trunk were coated on a daily basis, and I believe the horse has developed reactive airway disease, which means the lungs respond unfavourably to environmental contaminants like air pollutants (smog), dust, etc.”
Our advice is to ensure a healthier dust-free stable environment by using quality rubber stable matting.
For £33.99 you could kit out your horse’s stall with a non-porous, extra grip, cushioned stable flooring. An equestrian bedding that not only gives great support to standing horses, but encourages healthy development in the hoof with underfoot cushioning too.
