Obama makes his first big decision

President-elects enter the White House with plans to change the country if not the world, however one of their first decisions relates to rather smaller issue – the rug for the floor of the Oval Office.

And these aren’t your humble natural jute rugs either; these are genuinely plush bits of furniture. President George W. Bush opted for a modest $61,000 (£40,000) rug featuring an inspirational sunbeam pattern, while Bill Clinton ordered a $38,000 sombre navy rug with a large presidential seal in the centre, and senior Bush a blue-grey rug worth $28,550 with a gold seal.

Barack Obama now has the task of choosing the new floor covering, though you would hope that with the financial crisis America currently faces, president elect Obama might be wise to hold back on such extravagant indulgences for the time being.
